The reading performance of Victorian year 3 students is below the national average, according to the national report card on schooling released yesterday.

If gave results of reading, writing and numeracy testing of students in years 3, 5 and 7 across Australia conducted in 2003.

The percentage of Victorian students reaching the national benchmark was above the national average in all years - except year 3 reading.

According to the report, 90.4 per cent of Victorian year 3 students reached the national reading benchmark, compared to the national average of 92.4 per cent.
